The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. ~ Paul Halmos
At Stanbridge Lower School, our aim is for children to be fluent in Maths, developing a deep conceptual understanding of key concepts. We want children to recall and apply their knowledge quickly and efficiently, so they can problem solve in the wider world.
Mathematical development begins initially through daily play and practical activities in the Early Years. This evolves into a daily maths lesson in years one to four. Children work practically using resources to help them build a concrete experience of a concept or process, before moving onto pictorial elements and finally abstract problems (CPA Approach). Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible.
We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme to deliver all aspects of the national curriculum in Y1-4 and use the Maths Mastery resources recommended by the NCETM daily to develop a deep, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject in YR to Y4.
