Homework
At Stanbridge Lower School regular homework is set for all pupils to reinforce and extend that which is learnt in school, particularly in Literacy and Numeracy.
A relevant amount of homework is set for each year group focusing on reading, phonics and spelling, maths and the learning of times tables. We do not test spellings for children as we feel this makes spelling too restrictive and takes spelling away from the context of writing. Please read our homework policy.
We believe that homework should also foster creativity and enjoyment of the curriculum and involve families having fun together. This is provided in the form of Take Away Tasks. Take Away tasks are normally linked to topics, festivities, or extra curricular activities taking place in school. e.g. Make a star for Christmas, a WW2 Anderson Shelter.

Reading Support for Parents
We follow the Little Wandle Scheme for teaching children to read. We send home two books for your child to read and enjoy.
- Big Cat books is the reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.
- Oxford Reading Tree, Songbirds, Storyworld and Bug Club books are the sharing books. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.
The link below is for parents and “the resources on the link will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how this is taught at school and feel confident about supporting your child’s reading at home”. (Little Wandle)
