Early Years Outdoor Classroom Day

Outdoor Classroom Day is a day to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. On Thursday 18 May 2017, thousands of schools around the world took lessons outside and prioritised playtime. Why? When children learn and play outdoors they build skills for the future. Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. Play not only teaches critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, but is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood. Reception class spent the whole day learning outside. They drew a map of the school grounds, created an outdoor art gallery from natural materials, made key rings and took part in a Hungry Caterpillar treasure hunt.
