Designing and Making Roman Shields

Year 4 have been working hard over the last few weeks to create their own Roman shields, or ‘scutum’. They designed their shields after looking at some examples, thinking carefully about the designs on the front. They then made a prototype to test how they would join their handles, before using lots of skills such as scaling, scoring and joining to create their larger final versions. Once they were completed, the children enjoyed a PE lesson practising their ‘testudo’ shield wall formations and marking as if they were Roman legionaries.
